Learners must have prior experience or knowledge and/or exposure to the
service industry. Learners must over 18 years of age.

This course is partially funded for those currently in employment under the Skills To Advance initiative. 

This course is only available to those currently in employment and partially funded under the Skills to Advance initiative. ​

Skills to Advance is a national initiative that provides upskilling and reskilling opportunities to employees in jobs undergoing change and to those currently employed in vulnerable sectors. Course Modules

For beginners, this wine course offers foundational knowledge. Learners explore the main types and styles of wine through sight, smell, and taste, while gaining the skill to describe wines accurately and make food and wine pairings.

What You'll Learn

  • Common wine grapes and their characteristics

  • How to store and serve wine

  • The principles of food and wine pairing

  • How to describe wine using the WSET Level 1 Systematic Approach to Tasting Wine (SAT)

 

Grape Growing and Winemaking


Learners gain an understanding of the basic stages of grape growing, grape ripening and the production of red, white and rosé wines

  
Types and Styles of Wine


Learners explore still, sparkling and fortified wines and understand characteristics such as colour, sweetness, acidity, tannin, alcohol, body, aromas and flavours   


Principal Grape Varieties


The course introduces key varieties including Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio, Riesling, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir and Syrah/Shiraz, together with examples of wines associated with them   


Wine Tasting


Learners develop basic wine-tasting skills using the WSET Level 1 Systematic Approach to Tasting Wine (SAT) and learn to identify and describe key characteristics   


Food and Wine Pairing


Learners are introduced to the fundamental principles of matching food with wine and how characteristics such as sweetness, acidity and flavour influence pairing choices   


Storage and Service


The course covers the fundamental principles of storing and serving wine appropriately, helping learners make informed recommendations and respond to basic customer queries

 

Certification

The qualification has a minimum of six hours of study and is assessed through a 30-question closed-book multiple-choice examination. There are no formal entry requirements.
